Lewis White, Gaming Editor for MSPoweruser, also tweeted an apology, saying "This is never an issue we've wanted to have at MSPoweruser. The article author also reached out on Twitter to apologise, saying "It's never my intention to misrepresent a game or credit it with incorrect features/mechanics." The statement has since been retracted." The site says that he meant to say "building rest spots" instead of "building fires". Since the publishing of this article, it has come to light that the act of crafting a fire is not something the player can do. "Our review of Ancestors provided a small aside statement that the act of building fires was a mundane activity. They've since crossed out the "building fires" part, and their apology at the bottom clarifies the mistake. In their review, they said: "Sharpening sticks, building fires.most abilities are rather mundane at first". "Our review of Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey has been updated after the discovery of a factual inconsistency", they say, before expressing their apologies.

But MSPoweruser have since apologised to Desilets and Panache Digital Games on Twitter. In VG247's article, Desilets didn't mention which particular news outlets may have mentioned features which didn't exist in the game, or who otherwise seemed not to have played it. And I’m used to having a bigger number than that. But people expected my studio of 35 to ship a game that’s really close to Assassin’s Creed. “We received more than a 175 reviews but we received a 65 Metacritic. In talking about the game, it's often referred to as a game by a former developer of Assassin's Creed games, and Desilets seems to think this also hurt the game's reviews. My people are pissed.” It's understandable after the time and effort that went into such an ambitious concept: essentially, you were in charge of the evolution of your clan. Just like there is no fire and you cannot ride any horses in our game, but some reviewers said ‘it wasn’t that great when you ride horses’. “I know for a fact that some just invented some elements in the game. Reviews for Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey were mixed, but Desilets said that he could tell some of them hadn't played it. Glad I picked this little gem up.VG247 say that Desilets said as much whilst speaking at Reboot Develop Red. This was a great game, filled with challenge, adventure and potential. Although many scientists and critics alike have their doubts as to the accuracy of the Darwin Theory, it was certainly great to see what might have been. The story itself is rather forward and to the point. It was visually and graphically appealing, while having subtle background music/sound effects and a fascinating premise. Overall, this game was great and informative. Of course, there is a very real sense of permanence to the danger in this game, as every choice can risk the extinction of your entire lineage. I found that once I got the controls down the game became much more enjoyable.
#ANCESTORS HUMANKIND ODYSSEY PS4#
Mechanically (the ps4 version) was great, with very little issues or bugs, and has never crashed for me. Although I was frustrated, I was glad for having given it a chance. Not a lot of people have the mindset, patience, skill (and the attention span, for that matter) to give a challenging game like this a fair chance. It seems many people will bash this game right off the bat, in part due to that initial frustration, difficulty and lack of explanation. Although, perhaps there is sound reason to do so. Heavy tutorial sections often come across very demeaning to the player, in my opinion, as well as being burdensome. I think game devs often imagine a dumb audience and try to dumb everything down unnecessarily.

Honestly, I found this kind of approach refreshing, as it assumes intelligence and capability on the part of the player rather than the general "assume-the-player-is-an-idiot" approach many other games tend to take. At the beginning, the player's Apes are quite vulnerable and thrown into the wild with very little tutorial, direction or assistance. I initially felt a lot of frustration with learning the controls and mechanics. ANCESTORS: The Humankind Odyssey was an interesting concept and a game I enjoyed playing, although it was rather challenging, especially in the beginning when I feel a game should generally be a bit more forgiving.
